The Zambia Central Bank announced on the 11th that it will launch a new series of currencies, including six banknotes and six coins, on March 31, 2025.
The Zambian central bank has announced that the new banknotes have denominations of 500, 200, 100, 50, 20, and 10 kwacha, while the coin denominations are 5, 2, and 1 kwacha and 50, 10, and 5 unwe (1 kwacha equals 100 unwe). Previously, the maximum denomination of the old banknotes was 100 kwacha (approximately 3.6 US dollars).

Denny Kalyalya, the Governor of Zambia's Central Bank, stated that the new currency design incorporates Zambia's rich cultural heritage, showcasing unique flora and fauna landscapes as well as magnificent natural elements such as waterfalls. The new version of the currency also incorporates advanced security technology in its design, which can effectively prevent the circulation of counterfeit currency and ensure the integrity of the currency system. The launch of the new currency reflects the central bank's commitment to providing safe, efficient, easy-to-use, and suitable currency for daily transactions.

The announcement stated that the Zambian Ministry of Finance and National Planning will soon issue a legal document outlining the process for exchanging old currency for new currency, specifying the exchange period and designated exchange points nationwide, to facilitate the public in completing currency exchange.
The Zambia Central Bank will launch a nationwide publicity campaign to popularize the features of the new currency to the public. At the same time, the Zambian central bank will work closely with all relevant stakeholders to ensure the smooth and efficient promotion and circulation of the new currency.

On January 1, 2013, Zambia issued a new currency and reformed its face value, with a ratio of 1:1000 between the face value of the new currency and the face value of the old currency.
