According to the Zambia Times, the Bank of Zambia plans to implement a new currency nationwide from March 31, 2025. At that time, both new and old currencies will circulate simultaneously, with a transition period of 12 months.
The new currency design incorporates Zambia's rich cultural heritage, showcasing Zambia's unique flora and fauna landscapes as well as magnificent waterfalls. It includes 6 types of banknotes and 6 types of coins, with banknotes having denominations of 500, 200, 100, 50, 20, and 10 kwacha, and coins having denominations of 5, 2, and 1 kwacha and 50, 10, and 5 unwe (1 kwacha equals 100 unwe). Previously, the maximum face value of the old paper market was 100 kwacha. Compared with the old version of the currency, the abbreviation code (ZMW), numerical code (967), currency symbol (K), and currency value of the new version of the currency will not change.
